Exhibition Overview

The flowers of the four seasons at their finest! You will enjoy, through these depictions of flowers, experiencing this culture of floral delight of Hokusai in the Sumida Hokusai Museum. Flowers, beloved since the dawn of human history, have been the chosen subjects of countless paintings. This exhibition presents a superb selection of them, about a hundred works depicting flowers — cherry blossoms, of course, and many others — by Hokusai and his students. Flowers enjoyed in blossom-viewing parties, flowers that figured in familiar stories, flowers as designs applied to kimono or tools and equipment of many sorts: this exhibition introduces works with flowers that are a beloved part of every aspect of life. Through these depictions of flowers, you will enjoy, we hope, experiencing this culture of floral delight.
