Hokusai and the Samurai World

December 14, 2023(Thu.) - February 25, 2024(Sun.)
Hokusai's Musha-e are depicted with an awareness of expressing the movement of the figures as printings, even when they are wearing armor. This exhibition introduces some of Hokusai's depictions of people, focusing on his Musha-e. Works depicting real historical samurai figures, from ancient times to the Sengoku period ("Warring States period") as well as swords and armor, will be introduced, bringing us closer to the era of samurai who wielded power in Japanese history. *Musha-e is a type of Japanese ukiyo-e. It is one of the genres of ukiyo-e and represents warriors and samurai from Japanese history and mythology.

Exhibition Overview

This exhibition presents works depicting samurai, but not just famous warriors such as Minamoto no Yoritomo and Tokugawa Ieyasu. To Hokusai, who lived the Edo period, samurai were a familiar presence. These samurai also include people who lived, during two and a half centuries of peace, beside Hokusai and his pupils in the city of Edo, samurai as those artists saw them. Works depicting both actual battles and battle scenes as described in tales are also on display.

Exhibition Highlights

This exhibition also includes works picturing swords, spears, and other battle gear. A Tachi signed NOBUFUSA saku (Important Cultural Property) from the collection of the Japanese Sword Museum will join other artifacts on display. As you compare actual swords with their depictions, enjoy, as you let your imagination run free, Hokusai’s powers of expression.
