Exhibition Overview
Bird lovers abound today. And the roots of the Japanese love of birds run deep: bird-shaped ceramics have been discovered dating from the Jōmon period (11,000 to 400 BCE)! When the Manyōshū, Japan’s first poetry anthology, was being compiled in the seventh and eighth centuries, birds were used to communicate both seasons and emotions. Hokusai himself continued that tradition, creating many works that depict birds. His superb painting skills earned his avian works acclaim and contributed to the establishment of the bird-and-flower painting genre in nishiki-e polychrome prints. Exhibition also focuses on the use of birds as stage design elements and contributors to performances. These avian props help us decipher the feelings of the people present as well as to infer the season and place in question.

Reservations for groups are not being accepted for the time being.

Junior high, high school, and university students (including technical college, vocational school, and special training college students) will be requested to show student ID.

Adults 65 and over will be requested to show a document verifying age.

Persons with a certificate such as the following plus one accompanying person are admitted at a discount charge: physical disability, intellectual disability, rehabilitation, mentally handicapped health and welfare, atomic bomb victim health notebook, etc. (Please show your certificate at time of admission.)

Use of these tickets is limited to the day on which the exhibition is visited and allows you to see AURORA (Permanent Exhibition Room) and Exhibition Plus Room, too.
