【Wrok shop】Let’s learn Hokusai thought digital woodblock printing

Participants will see the process of printing and experience printing by themselves.
“Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji Under the Wave off Kanagawa” included in our collection was resolved by colour and based on its result, wood of cherry blossom was curved as a woodblock by digital laser. The production of Japanese woodblock print is a complex process involving steps, each performed Artist/Block Caver/ Printer. We can understand deeply about Ukiyo-e though those process.

4th Architectural Tour in the Sumida Hokusai Museum (only in Japanese)

We will held “architectural tour guided by Kota Fukuhara (from Kazuyo Sejima and Associates)” as a related event of special exhibition “Kazuyo Sejima SANAA x Hokusai”.Our museum designed by world renowned architect Kazuyo Sejima is located in the place strongly connected to Hokusai. The purpose of visiting our Museum is to see Hokusai’s masterpieces as well as Sejima’s architecture. From the viewpoint of a designer, he show participants around the Museum, after he give a lecture on a process of the construction of the Sumida Hokusai Museum and its architectural features. This tour always full due to high popularity.

【Performance】Japanese artist Akira Yamagichi will draw huge Bodhidharma

Current exhibition is “Performer ☆ Hokusai” which focus on the fact that he executed a work of performance art. In 1817 he carried out this performance at the Nagoya Nishikakesho painting a huge portrait of the founder of Zen Buddhism, Bodhidharma.
What happen if Hokusai’s performance will be made today? We will held the event related to this exhibition.
Following to Hokusai, a famous Japanese contemporary artist named Akira Yamaguchi is trying to perform a huge Bodhidharma drawing!

Reading performance “Fanatic Artist Hokusai”

“Fanatic Artist Hokusai” directed by Amon Miyamoto was held with applause on 27th July at the British Museum in London. While we organized the preview event, we could feel how Hokusai was popular there. After London’s play, the performance is being developed and will be shown on Sat 17- Sun 18 September at the Hikifune culture center.

Digital huge votive picture "Susano-no Mikoto Making a Pact with the Sprits of Disease (須佐之男命厄神退治之図)"

For a memorial of this year’s Ushijima shrine big festival held every five years, "Susano-no Mikoto Making a Pact with the Sprits of Disease(須佐之男命厄神退治之図)" will be shown as a digital image using 4K projector in the main shrine. It is the main work restored by latest digital technology and traditional artisan skill.
This show will apply animation and new way of appreciation ex. enlarging detail and comparing color. The votive picture is expanded its new world by digital technology.

Junior Curator guide tour

Junior high school students debuted as our museum curator. They had devoted summer vacation to have training to be curator. Their efforts will be finally shown. From the original standpoint of local kids, they explained the relationship between Hokusai and Sumida.

Night museum Tour ”A hundred horror stories” at the Sumida Hokusai Museum

Night museum Tour ”A hundred horror stories” was held from Thu 24 August to Sat 26 August. Participants toured our museum in the night as navigated by our official ambassador, comedian “Katsushika Hutome and Gyorome”. Their singing sing was said to make an unnatural phenomenon and participants looked for the reason why it happened. The real Ukiyo-e work was displayed at the permanent exhibition during those 3 nights. We could have good reputation from many participants!

Kamishibai (Storytelling with picture cards)

We will perform Kamishibai on August. All generation can enjoy this Japanese traditional reading tale performance. Participants sometimes sing a song and answer the quiz in the show. Please come early until full of the audience in the hall.
